I turned the vial in my hand, watching as the tiny tentacles twisted their way up the inside as if it was trying to escape. Robert had both hands on the steering wheel at the 10-2 position, his entire focus on the road in front of him. We left earlier than anticipated, leaving Nate to spend more time with his family. I just wanted to get this out of my hand, no matter how fascinating it was to watch. It was creeping me out.

For someone who hated using technology, Robert was adept behind the wheel of a car, his hand lazily pushing the gear stick into fifth and roaring up the motorway.

We were almost home. Home? Is that what it was to me now? I had started thinking about the little cabin as mine and relished the idea of sinking into the bathtub surrounded by a mountain of bubbles.

The journey back had been pretty silent, both of us stuck deep in thought. His eyes were the mirror to his soul, and I could see the agony behind the beautiful blue pools. He tried to hide it from me when he saw me looking at him, but it didn’t last long, and the facade always cracked. I couldn’t fathom what he must be feeling, I had never loved anyone that way before. A spike of jealousy rammed itself inside me, that a dead woman held such loyalty and devotion. If Robert had been squirrelled away for 500 years, shunning company, did that mean that he wasn’t with another woman, or was there a little village somewhere that he used to pop in, get his pleasure, and then go back to his solitude?

No, that just didn’t seem like him.

He held the door open and looked away when Zoe and Luc were showing too much PDA.

Tyres hit gravel as we turned down the long driveway to the pack lands. A Lycan manned the gate and rushed to open the way for us when he saw it was Rob driving. “You’re back so soon, Alpha,” he stuttered out.

“Something came up,” Robert replied through the open window.

The wire fence was pulled open with enough space to drive through and clanked closed again behind us. The six-foot wire fence wasn’t very high, but it was enough to deter other people from trespassing—humans mostly—especially with the ‘beware of dangerous animals’ signs that were dotted around the exterior.

There was a large communal parking area where all the vehicles were kept. No one had their own car, but there were two vans and three cars that were owned for pack use. The vans were used to transport the goods to the local market town for sale and trade, and the cars were for a variety of reasons. Currently, only one car remained in the lot, not including the one we were sitting in. The vans were parked up neatly to one side, the delivery of fresh goods already made earlier this morning.

A young man rushed over as I opened the door, his hand outstretched to help me out.
